Dr. Derek Ritzmann is an economist and a lawyer. He has practiced as an expert economist in areas where economics and law intersect, in particular in the areas of competition law, regulation, and arbitration, for over 28 years.
Dr. Ritzmann previously spent over a decade in government, in senior positions in competition and regulatory agencies. He was the first Chief Economist of the Hong Kong Competition Commission, in the Chief Economist Team at the European Commission’s Competition Directorate, and Principal Economist at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. He has advised the Asian Development Bank, UNCTAD, and the OECD. Dr. Ritzmann has given expert evidence to government authorities and courts in a number of different jurisdictions, including Australia, Hong Kong, China, the European Commission, Singapore, India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. He is also a Professor at Hong Kong University.
In previous private practice, he headed the Asia-Pacific practice of a large U.S.-based economic consulting firm, practiced with a leading consulting firm in Europe, as a competition lawyer in Australia with a leading firm, as a consultant to a Hong Kong law firm, and as a director with an Asia-focused specialist consulting firm.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Oxford University and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics. He is also a qualified lawyer in the USA (New York), the EU (Ireland), the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. He is listed in the Who’s Who Legal Directory as a Competition Economist and as a Global Leader.
